Carolee Schneemann

Carolee Schneemann (1939–2019) was a pioneering American artist whose groundbreaking practice explored the body, sexuality, gender, and the boundaries between artistic disciplines. Working across performance, film, painting, and drawing, Schneemann often used her own body as both subject and medium, challenging traditional ideas about the female body in art.

Her influential practice helped redefine performance and body art while confronting the male dominated structures of the art world. In 1972, she published Cézanne, She Was a Great Painter, a critical reflection on gender and the position of women within art history.
