Sharon Stepman

Sharon Stepman is a photographer whose work brings together surreal imagery, abstraction, and experimental visual storytelling. Her photographs move between the playful and the mysterious, creating unexpected images that often feel suspended somewhere between reality and imagination.

Influenced by experimental and video art, including the work of Nam June Paik, Stepman uses overexposure, layering, and digital manipulation to transform familiar subjects into dreamlike compositions. Through distortion and abstraction, she creates images that are less concerned with documenting what is seen and more interested in capturing emotion, atmosphere, and perception.

There is a sense of experimentation throughout Stepman’s practice. Color, light, and fragmented imagery come together in compositions that can feel energetic, humorous, or quietly unsettling. Her photographs invite the viewer to look beyond the recognizable and enter a more subjective visual world.

Stepman’s work has been presented internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Boboli Gardens in Florence.
