Claudia Hassel

Claudia Hassel is a German artist born in 1964 who lives and works in Grafrath, Germany. Her paintings explore the relationship between color, form, and space. Her practice has evolved from expressive abstraction toward a more reduced visual language defined by geometry, clarity, and structure. Hassel initially studied advertising graphics and design before turning her focus to painting and drawing. From 2011 to 2013, she studied color painting under Prof. Jerry Zeniuk in Bad Reichenhall. She continued her studies with Zeniuk at the Academy of Fine Arts Kolbermoor, where she became his master student.

Color remains at the center of Hassel’s practice. Rather than using it to describe the visible world, she allows color to establish its own presence and define the space within each composition. Clearly defined fields of color create rhythm, tension, and balance. Through reduction, she removes what is unnecessary and gives each color and form room to exist on its own. Her paintings are not representations of the world but spaces for perception. A quiet intensity lives within them, where order meets movement and stillness exists alongside tension. Each composition becomes its own visual environment shaped by color, rhythm, and space. Hassel’s practice has also brought her to the United States. In 2019, she participated in a residency program at 313 Gallery in New Jersey. In 2022, she received a fellowship for the ESKFF Artist in Residency Program at Mana Contemporary in New Jersey.
